#coachable

Are you a coachable athlete? How do you know? Do you even care?

One of the greatest pleasures of my life is contributing to the excellence of another person. It started early in my career in the Army and continues today. When people are coachable, then it makes it easy to help as motivates me to give you my all. My eyes light up and I get super enthusiastic and as much information as I have on the subject flows like water.

Who wants to achieve greatness? Not just in the small petri dish of our gym, but in local, regional, national and international competition in the sport of your choice.

Coachable athletes are students first and foremost and come ready to learn like chicks in the nest. You are asked to keep your minds, eyes and ears open without focusing on unnecessary and unimportant metrics. I often present you with methods or techniques that buck conventional dogma. It's not because I'm being different for different's sake. I spend hours every day looking at training, poring over books and videos, weighing options and presenting the best information available.

It's easy to get tunnel vision when you have some success and ignore the point of your training. My job is to rein it back in and get you to pump the brakes a little. I try to get you to refocus on your goals and your training, not someone else's abilities. "If they can do it, I should be able to too." No ma'am or sir, you do not have their background or their conditioning or their experience, etc. ad infinitum.

I'm not a cheerleader. Coaches aren't cheerleaders. Coaches teach, experiment and help grow the athlete. We acknowledge success like a first muscle-up (yay!), then present how the athlete can continue to improve. There's value in that. There's a bigger payoff there. We're in the longview business, not the succeed for today business.

Be a coachable athlete: Come to class ready to learn, focused on the task and on your own long-term development and watch how far a bird can fly!
