170526 - Food Fact Friday's with Bri - "MURPH"

I am excited to start sharing my nutrition expertise with all of you here at Choice City! For those of you who don't know me, I just completed my master's in nutrition at CSU. Now that I have finished my degree, you must think I should have the nutrition stuff all figured out - man, I wish that were the case. However, I hope I can share some insight with you all from my coursework and experiences.

I may have more facts in my head at the end of my degree than when I started, but I certainly don't feel like the field of nutrition is any less complicated. Actually, I feel the exact opposite. Before my degree, I was contentedly eating my meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, like a good little Paleo CrossFitter. However, I now know that this prescription doesn't work for everyone, and each of us has different needs. I hope I can help you all figure out what those are when it comes to food!

Here's one thing I do know, though. You guys are all on the right track - because you've already taken the first step to being healthier by being here at Choice City. You are physically active with a group of people who are insanely supportive. Surprisingly enough, these two things are emphasized over and over again in the nutrition world and throughout my degree - physical activity and social support. That is because these two things are very helpful as we work to achieve our nutrition goals.

Let me tell you why: time and again physical activity has been shown to do all sorts of awesome things for our bodies. I don't probably need to tell you all, because you've probably experienced some of these great benefits first hand. From improving your sleep, decreasing stress, preventing disease to just overall making you a better human, getting into the gym on a regular basis is actually one of the best things you can do to reach your nutrition goals.

The social support we receive when we walk in the door of Choice City is another awesome benefit of this gym that we should take advantage of when it comes to our nutrition. It is difficult to change your eating habits without the support of your social circle. Luckily, you have a group of people right here with goals similar to your own. Nutrition goals can be approached similarly to achieving all of the awesome PRs you guys got this week. If you have a goal related to nutrition you want to achieve, let someone know (me, Michael, Lauren, or just about anyone at the gym), and have them hold you accountable to meeting that goal, or even work toward that goal with you! Once you achieve these goals, treat them the same way you do PRs - celebrate them and let us know so we can celebrate with you!

I'll be writing a nutrition-related post every Friday! I look forward to hearing your feedback and if there's something you are interested in hearing about, let me know.

"Murph"
For time:
1 mile Run
100 Pull-ups
200 Push-ups
300 Squats
1 mile Run

In memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.

This workout was one of Mike's favorites and he'd named it "Body Armor". From here on it will be referred to as "Murph" in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.

Partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Start and finish with a mile run. If you've got a twenty pound vest or body armor, wear it.
