“We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.”
“We need, first of all, for there to be accountability, for there to be somebody who is responsible for enforcing standards and holding people’s feet to the fire. ”
“Lower.”
CrossFit has a set series of movement standards that we strive to uphold. On the rare occasion that they deviate, we must be able to articulate the change in such a way that all of our athletes get it, can adapt to it and abide by it. We admittedly failed when it came to the hand release push-ups on game day during 18.4 Some frustration and tears later, we have a solution.
Effectively put the standard out to each and every CCCF athlete and hold their feet to the fire when they don't meet it. Or, scale it appropriately so that the training goal is met with the least deviation from the standard.
Some of y'all struggled with the standards just yesterday during the wall balls. In athletes' attempts to go faster and get a better time, there were short squats, balls not going over the line etc. EVEN WHEN SPECIFICALLY TOLD THAT THAT WAS THE STANDARD (yes, I am yelling. The self aware folks are cringing and the non-self aware don't care enough anyway).
We hold ourselves to the standard not because the coach said so, but because our only way to accurately measure ourselves against previous self is to keep to the same standard of movement, then go faster/harder/heavier.
Keep that in mind the next time you see others not meeting the standard. Feel secure and proud of the extra work you do because you do it right, every time.
You know I do, because the eyes of the gym are upon me every time I work out.
“You have competition every day because you set such high standards for yourself that you have to go out every day and live up to that.”
