Stop comparing your chapter 1 to someone else's chapter 20.
I love the saying "Comparison is the thief of joy." It makes so much sense!! When you look at someone else doing kipping pull-ups and it breaks your heart that you don't have them yet...give yourself a little slap on the wrist! YET is a key word here. It's all about perspective! That person has probably been doing CrossFit for a while, went through the progressions to get there, and practices them a ton! Their ability to do that skill should in no way hinder your happiness or satisfaction with your own skills. Work hard at it and you will get there too! Will it be tomorrow? Hate to break it to you...probably not. That's where patience comes in.
I've been doing a lot of weight training the past couple of months and BOY is it frustrating!! I want the instant gratification of getting stronger, right now!! Daily PR's and big muscles!! I know...I need to slow my roll. It takes time to build strength and skills. If I focus too much on where I'm not at the moment, I'll lose sight of how very far I've come which is always something to be proud of!
Last week, tons of our amazing athletes PR'd the benchmark WOD "Cindy!" I also saw plenty of people bring up their one rep maxes on the 1RM powerlifting days. These are things to be celebrated! It doesn't matter if the person next to you lifted 100lbs more or did 10 rounds more as long as you improved yourself. Take that pride in those accomplishments and enjoy it! Then move forward and stay persistent!
If you see someone doing something that you want to be able to do, then get after it! Let one of your coaches know your goal and we will help make a plan for you. You'll focus so hard on your own path that you won't have time to envy the journey of others! Friendly competition with another person might motivate you and keep you excited, but your own determination and commitment are the only things that will truly get you the results you're looking for.
INSTEAD of comparing yourself to others, try to HAVE:
- Perseverance to continue working hard
- Patience to see the improvements
- Pride in your progress
- Perspective on your own situation
Don't forget, YOU are the only one that matters in this and YOU are doing amazing! Keep your head down and keep at it!
