170118 - Faces of Choice City - Judy

For the next couple of weeks, we are going to use the Wednesday Blog Posts to show some of the faces that make up our great community! For the first one, we'd like to introduce you all to the lovely Miss Judy Geckler!

She joined us in May of 2016 and has been a devoted member of the 9AM class. Her uplifting demeanor and kind soul brighten up the mid-morning each day! She is a super hard worker and always ready to learn new things! Judy is a true inspiration and proves to all of us that age is nothing but a number!

Tell us about yourself!
I am originally from Ohio and got my bachelor's THE Ohio State University. I got my Masters at Fordham University in New York City in Counseling and Personnel Services. My career ended up being in Social Work  and for about 10 years, I worked in New Jersey at a nursing home. I loved working with older adults and younger children. After my husband retired in 2009 we moved to Colorado. In total we have 5 kids and 12 grandchildren. I love to walk around outdoors, especially in the beautiful woods.

Why do you "CrossFit?"
My grandson did it in college and loved it. He enjoyed the exercises but also the community and family aspect. He talked about it so much and when I visited him in South Carolina, I would go watch them workout.
I thought "Oh that looks like fun, but not for someone my age!"
He said, "Why not!?"
He questioned why I thought that I couldn't. My answers were because of my age and that I would be very out of place among the sea of young people. With encouragement from him and his sister, I finally decided to try it out! I found a gym in Fort Collins, and I've been doing it ever since!
I love it because it's a challenge. I went to the gym so many years and it just didn't do for me what I wanted. I wanted a challenge and now I have it!

What makes "Choice City CrossFit" so special?
I love the family here! The coaches are so eager to help you to learn new exercises in a way that you can do them. Their enthusiasm is contagious! It is so confirming to feel supported and not out of place.  Everyone cheers for each other and give high fives no matter how you did or who you are. Even though everyone must be 40 years younger than me, I always feel accomplished. I love being here and starting my day off this way!
