170814 - Motivation Monday - Functional Fitness

On Saturday, some of our athletes who have signed up to run a Spartan Beast Race at the end of the month, came to practice the obstacles that they will encounter. It was really cool to learn how to throw a spear, scramble up an 8 ft. wall, and swing like a monkey on the rings but the COOLEST skill I learned that day was how to pick up an unconscious person properly so I can run with them on my back...known as a fireman's carry! That sounds a little weird, so let me explain. 
CrossFit at it's core is a FUNCTIONAL FITNESS program! That means that when you regularly do CrossFit, you will perform better overall as a human. Life requires a fair amount of skill and strength to life it to it's fullest. We want to prepare our bodies and minds for the KNOWABLE such as carrying your kid when they don't want to walk or picking up your keys from the far-away ground when you drop them BUT we also want to prepare our bodies and minds for the UNKNOWABLE such as carrying our friends out of burning buildings or chasing after a runaway dog. We don't want those emergency situations to happen, but they do and so we need to be ready. CrossFit helps to make us ready.
