Sport and Exercise in a time of Uncertainty.
Well, the Olympics are postponed for another year. All sports are off the air and we’re forced to watch professional athletes wile away their hours on Tik Tok and video games. The CrossFit Games are on their way to being cancelled for this year. Thousands of athletes are not going to be able do what they’ve been training for the year, 4 years or their whole lives to be able to do.
What can we as a community of athletes do about it?
Well, not a whole heck of a lot. There are bigger issues we have to deal with. Large and small businesses are closed and closing. Restaurants, shops and unique businesses that we’ve come to love may never open again. Even without contracting COVID-19, folks’ physical and mental health is deteriorating because they don’t know when their next check, opportunity or planned goal will come.
There are things you as an individual (and your families and friends) can do.
Keep active. Move your body. Keep in communication (social distancing was a stupid name to being with. Physical distancing while maintaining emotional closeness is better, but less catchy) Keep making plans. Look forwards to later this month, this year. Keep your edge sharp. Do the hard things. Work out. Get those endorphins going and get your body moving in a prescribed manner!
Choice City CrossFit has always been more than just a physical location. While Lauren continues to do the right thing keeping the gym doors closed, she’s providing quality instruction (still) programming challenging and goal-oriented workouts (still) and organizing social events to keep you plugged in to your friends and classmates (still!). Keep engaged and (virtually) show up! Encourage people that wouldn’t ordinarily come to the gym to do the drop-in workouts (it’s $10 to drop in to the Zoom class!)
We can’t go to ball games or watch sports on TV, but we can stay connected, compete with our classmates, support each other and the gym during this trying time and come out the end fit and ready to pick those goals right back up!
