1) A little background:
I was born and raised in Rochester, MN. After going off to play college baseball at Iowa State University (and attend just enough classes to get a degree) I returned to Minnesota and worked at the local NBC and FOX television affiliates, working as a sports reporter and anchor. Then my daughters were born and my wife and I decided to follow her career while I stayed home with the kids. Twelve years ago, we moved to Fort Collins and now it looks like we're here for good! Now I write books and function as a taxi service for my kids.
2) Why CrossFit?
I asked that question many times in the past, which is why it took me so long to try it. But on Day One I knew I loved it. The welcoming people, the workouts that are varied, structured, and best of all, figured out for you. And the coaching that keeps us safe and successful!
3) What Makes CCCF special?
The people, definitely. The vibe. Every new person that comes is welcomed with open arms. Every social event we have is well-attended, because we all have so many friends at the gym. We have dogs, we have toddlers. And most importantly, we have people who pull for each other, whether it's about getting in that last rep before the time cap or a difficult time in someone's personal life.
4) Favorite movement?
Either the deadlift or rope climbs, which is pretty cool because one of them I'm pretty good at and the other I'm terrible.
5) Best Workout So Far?
I really enjoyed the last Murph. I was vested for the first time (but partitioned) and about 1/3 of the way through, I didn't think it would be physically possible for me to finish. It wasn't fast, but I pushed through and got the reps done.
6) Best Event So Far?
Murphs are always my favorite, I think. I love pushing hard, then going out for food and drinks (pre and post COVID). But my first Open was also super memorable.
7) Future Goals?
I just hope to be able to keep coming to the gym regularly. So far, I'm still on an upward trajectory, setting frequent PR's. When that stops, I hope to maintain the level of fitness I have for as long as possible. I love that the rest of life feels easy in comparison!
