161130 - CrossFit

During my most recent competition, I looked around and saw athletes using electric devices, crazy massage methods, supposedly helpful apparel, tons o' supplements, compression sleeves, special oils, and KT/Rock Tape on every inch of the body. I was so sure that these items, which SEEMED essential to the athlete's performance, were the reason they were finding success in the sport of CrossFit. But were they really!? Were the athletes downing brightly colored pre-workout drinks, sniffing smelling oils, wearing huge weight-lifting belts, and using muscle activation machines the same athletes on the winner's podium? NOPE! Nope! nope! It was the athletes who walked around chugging plain old H2O, eating a big Tupperware full of chicken with veggies while heading to the warm-up area where they took their sweet time getting the blood flowing and practicing the upcoming movements. Those were the athletes standing proud in first place.

CrossFit is meant to develop functional fitness but if we rely on “things” to perform effectively, then in real-life situations we won’t be able to put that fitness to good use! These “things” may also solidify bad habits. Instead of working ankle mobility, people wear Olympic Lifting Shoes. Instead of bracing the core during heavy lifts, people use weight-belts. And instead of eating healthy, people use artificial powdered nutrition. I'm not going to lie...I absolutely love my Nike Metcons and my protective natural grips and my SFH Protein Shakes! There are plenty of other fun CrossFitty things that I’d like to have too HOWEVER, I realize now that If you're not willing to put in the wise work and hard training necessary to improve, then all the gadgets and consumables in the world won't make you better. As Thomas A. Edison once said, “There is no substitute for hard work!”
