170607 - Faces of Choice City - Madi

Madi is the perfect example of a CrossFit athlete! She works on her weaknesses, she involves herself in the community, she takes care of herself when she's injured or not feeling well, she cheers loudly for others in the midst of her own suffering, she listens to her coaches for all they have to say, she eats consistently clean (aside from random whole bags of gummy bears), she finds joy in kicking her own butt, and she is an overall super strong devoted athlete! Madi and her hubby, Dana, are an integral part of the Choice City family and none of us could imagine the gym without them!

Tell us about yourself!
I grew up and have lived in Fort Collins most of my life. I went to college at SD School of Mines in Rapid City, SD, where I got my B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering. I also played volleyball and did high jump in track during my four years of undergrad. We moved back to Fort Collins about 3 years ago, and I have been working as a structural engineer here in town. The best part of living in SD is that I met Dana (he’s pretty cool…). The best day of my life so far was getting to marry him in August of last year. I have really been enjoying adventuring through life with him, along with our devil cat, Dobby. We have found a love for the outdoors, including hiking, biking, and camping. I still regularly play indoor and outdoor volleyball and still absolutely love it.

Why do you "CrossFit"?
Dana actually made me start crossfit, and I was extremely reluctant to try it at first. We had been trying out crossfit-type workouts in Gillette before we moved so he was excited to try out a real crossfit gym. About a month after he joined, he talked me into “just trying it for a month”, although I swore I wouldn’t like it. Boy, was I wrong… I continue to crossfit for a lot of reasons. It is a big stress-reliever and tough workouts make me a generally happier person. It also helps satisfy my competitive nature, both against others and against my own times/weights/goals. It has been very fulfilling to set and achieve goals and to continue to better myself. The feeling of hitting a new PR that you’ve been working towards or finally nailing a movement or skill that you’ve been battling makes all of the time spent at the gym, all of the painful workouts, all of the sweat puddles, and all of the frustrating moments worth it. HOWEVER, the biggest reason I crossfit is for the community. I am lucky to have met so many truly amazing people through crossfit, many of which I hang out with on a regular basis and have created strong relationships with outside the gym.

What makes Choice City so special?
The community, where everyone is kind, encouraging, and almost everyone likes to drink.  And the coaches, who are always focused on form and injury-prevention, are very knowledgeable, and are always willing to help. I have to give special praise to Coach Michael who, over the past 3 years, has taken the time to understand me as a person and an athlete, and how I respond to critique, sarcasm, and life in general (as he does with all CCCF athletes). Whether he knows it or not, he, along with the entire community, helped me through a really tough time in my life, and I will forever be grateful for that. I love my Choice City family!
