170912 - Tips Tuesday - Productive Rest

Ever taken a burpee nap? It's that couple of seconds at the bottom of the burpee where you contemplate whether getting up is worth it or even possible. Rough spot to be! Not to mention, time can get away from you down there and 30 seconds later, you've only done one rep! There are good ways to rest during workouts and there are not such good ways. So what works?

BREATHING - In between movements when you really need a second to rest, stop what you're doing and take three deep breaths, making sure that the "out" breath is very aggressive! Push that unwanted CO2 outta there, then get back to it!

COUNTING - Some people like to count down from 5 to give themselves more frequent breaks but very short! Find a number that works for you then anytime you stop moving, start counting!

WALKING - Take a few steps back and an immediate few steps forward and continue your work! Some people claim that walking in a circle helps them regain focus and rest too! Maybe try both and see what works for you!

POSITION - Instead of taking a burpee nap, try resting at the top of the movement. Whether it be a thurster, burpee, handstand push-up, squat, or push up, it's easy to get defeated and get less air when your at the bottom of these movements. Side note...this doesn't apply to pull-ups or ring rows!

If you need water, if you need to fix your plats, chalk up your hands, or pull a chip out for reps...every moment counts so try using the strategies above as you take these breaks to do even important stuff and you may see an improvement in your times JUST because you had more productive and speedy rest!
