Internal vs. External Orientation
How do you know you’ve done a good job?
If you have “that feeling” that you’ve done wither a good or bad job, you’re more of an internally oriented person. Your heart, mind and “gut” tell you what’s what more than any kind of external feedback.
If you look to others for validation or as a measurement for your own accomplishment, you’re more of an externally oriented person. You find yourself comparing yourself to the competition or looking to a coach or parent to tell you you’ve done a good job.
Neither one is better than the other. I think folks are a blend of these types depending on the circumstances. I might orient externally when trying to meet a deadline or accomplish a prescribed task. I might orient internally when I’m playing chess or making food. It all depends on the individual.
The important takeaway is to understand the type of orienter you are and how it impacts the way you send and receive information and how that might impact others that orient differently.
