1.) Background and History?

Born and raised in a small town called Bocas de Satinga Olaya Herrera, Narino, on the Pacific Coast. I come from a large and very poor family. We are seven siblings, five of whom are women and two are men. My parents and most of my relatives still living in the town.

I left my town and moved to the city of Cali when I was 16 years old and pregnant with my first child (Karen). In 1999, I had an opportunity to travel to Italy. I lived and worked there for about two years until I met my American ex-husband. In 2002, we married in Colombia and my older daughter and I moved to America to live with him in Miami, FL. My daughter and I did not speak any English when we moved here.  In 2004, we moved to Pennsylvania and I had my second child (Sarah). In 2014, I got divorced and I moved to Fort Collins to be closer to my sister and nephews, who are the only other closer relatives I have in this country. Here in Fort Collins, I went to Front Range Community College and earned my Associate in Art, then, I transferred to CSU, and last spring (May 2020), I graduated with my bachelor in Social Work. This was an important and big step in my personal life, especially since I became the first generation in my family to adventure, to travel to other countries, and become the first to graduate in my family. I have been blessed to have many good opportunities to visit and live in many other states and countries. Now, I work for a nonprofit agency (Alianza NORCO) serving the undocumented community in FC and surrounding communities. I love my job and what I do, and I get to do it in my first language (Spanish). I love my life here in the United States very much, the communities, and the people that I get to share my life with every day. They are all a blessing in my life!

2.) Why CrossFit?
I have always loved to work out and try my best to live a healthy lifestyle. I have been a member of many gyms and participated in many group classes. I have enjoyed it very much, but after several years of these time of workout routines, I decided it was time for a fitness change. Although, I have heard good and bad things about Crossfit; it was up to me to try it out and find on my own if Crossfit was a good fit for me or not. Now, I have been doing Crossfit for almost two years, and I love doing Crossfit and its community.

3.) What makes CCCF so special?
I found out about CCCF through its website and I read what its members were saying about safety, good coaching, and community. From the moment I visited the CCCF I felt the warm welcome from Lauren, the other coaches, and members that were in the facility the first day I attended the gym. A couple of the priorities for me in finding a good Crossfit facility was safety movements, a good coaching style, and a healthy community. At CCCF, I have found all of these and more. I have become physically and mentally stronger. I have made strong and supportive friendships. I also like the holidays and partner workouts or when we have done open Crossfit competition (before COVID19), where most of the members participated no matter the fitness level they were at. Everyone felt good and supported having someone cheering on them. After my first year as a member, I look forward to the new year nutrition challenge, where you paired up with another member to support each other in learning to eat healthier and lose weight together. If you do very well at it, you might become the lucky winner of the weight loss challenge. How exciting is that to be part of such a great community and Crossfit facility!:)

4.) Favorite and least favorite movements in CF?

Least favorite movements: overhead squat, push press, snatch?

Favorite movements: power cleans, pullups, push jerk, handstand pushups (though I don’t have this move under control yet, I love this movement!)

5.) Most memorable workout?

I have enjoyed a lot when we do the workout “earn your pie” on Thanksgiving, “Visting the Girls” and Murph.

6.) Future gym and life goals?

Gym goals: Building good relationships with each member of the gym, contributing to the growth and healthy environment of the facility; becoming better and stronger with each movement/skill. I want to able to do many of the workout movements unassisted, for example, HSTD pushups, pull-ups, rope climbs, among other skills.

Life goals: Continuing school to earn my master's in social work. Right now, I am doing an online certification on Advanced Clinical Behavior Health Certificate. Continuing growing at work by building strong connections with clients, coworkers, and community partners. In a year, I would like to be a homeowner, and hopefully in FC or within the near area. Also, being a better supporter, mother, and continue to strengthen my personal relationship with my special man-friend.
