150619 - Using People for your Benefit | CrossFit, Catalyst

I'm here to tell you, that you should use people for your own benefit.

Now, before you shut me down, let me explain.

Community is the biggest social element that drives success. Think about hunter-gatherers. If you were a hunter and hooked up with a gatherer you'd be pretty well off. But imagine if you associated with a group of like-minded individuals that allowed you to be more productive? If you had a bad hunting or gathering day, then the folks with better days would share their bounty. Alone, you'd starve. If you have one or two bad days, the group is there to pick you up and keep you going.

See where I'm going with this?

It doesn't benefit the community in any tangible way to help you out, but it builds greater bonds and makes you more willing to help them out when they need the boost. And, as productive members of that community, when the going gets tough, everyone supports each other.

Now, we're going to have a community competition that starts effectively this weekend. The way it works is that you establish a baseline and in two months' time, we re-test your baseline. That's it. The better you get at that workout, the bigger the potential reward (in this case, some $$$ on top of the knowledge that you improved significantly with the support of your community). Yeah sure, the top performers in each category will get something too. We always have to recognize excellence. However it's the community that benefits from everyone setting a goal to get better. When you have a less than stellar training day, we're here to lean on until your training days get better.

You're leveraging the community (other people) to get better (for your benefit) which makes us all as a community better!

So, if you haven't signed up on the board to be a part of this event, I challenge you to do so, and how high we can elevate each other!
