150812 - Coaching vs. Babysitting.

With an absolute ton of new athletes both new to CrossFit and new to CFNFC, I'd like to take a moment to reiterate what you can expect from me (and Bri once she tests out!)

As your coach, you have hired me as a local, experienced subject matter expert in a range of specialties: Nutrition, Powerlifting, Weightlifting, Programming, Endurance, Sprint and Speed work. I am not THE subject matter expert and when I don't know something I usually defer to those accomplished people that are: Robb Wolf, Jim Wendler, Mark Rippetoe, Greg Everett, Mike Burgener, the Ma Strength team, CJ Martin, Rudy Nielsen, Ben Bergeron, the Gym Jones team, the Military/Mountain Athlete team, Brian Mackenzie, John Welbourn, the CrossFit HQ team et al. In doing so, I use the best information available to make programming decisions and steer you in what I feel is the right direction for your goals and value your input so we can approach it as a team

My #1 job is to ensure your safety. This is accomplished teaching the most efficient and biomechanically correct form possible and asking you to repeat that form ad nauseum. Mechanics first.
Your #1 job is to learn and repeat that most efficient and biomechanically correct form over and over until it becomes second nature, then and only then should you increase load, distance, or try to shorten the cycle time of the movement.

That's what you're paying me to expect from you.

I absolutely love to coach. I want to coach. Hell, I'd rather coach than do most other things to include taking care of myself. .

You'll notice that I present things in a interrogative manner, trying to lead you to the right answer. I ask you to recall those lessons you've learned over time to reinforce that learning and give you sparks of recall so it sticks. If It comes down to making on the spot corrections in the middle of a workout, I'll do it twice then STFU, because I don't want to nag.
I will give you drills, progressions and suggestions all day, every day to make you a better person, athlete and CrossFitter. I will stay late and come early if I am allowed to coach.

If I have to babysit, I will ignore you and move on to those receptive to learning.

If I correct you and you nod your head and do not make the correction, ignore me or if you give me a reason why you're not doing it, aka an excuse as to why you know better since you're a know it all or a YouTube Ranger, then I am not your coach, I am a babysitter.

I absolutely hate being a babysitter, but I am comfortable doing it for the money you're paying me to coach. Babysitting comes with a few realities though:

One, expect to get THE LOOK when you do something stupid. That's what babysitters do.
Two, expect to be told in the most tactful way I can muster at the time that you are f-ing it up.
Three, If you fail to improve because you just don't listen, I will tell you in the most tactful way I can muster that I told you so, and then try again to coach you.

If you do not respond to me trying to coach you again, then I will shut down until you seek me out for coaching.

My time is valuable and limited to the hour I have with you every day. I spread myself through all the athletes we have and give everyone who listens 110%. Take advantage of that. Don't overpay for a babysitter.
