Fitfam
The more time you spend at your box, the closer you get with your fellow athletes, or fitfam as I like to call them. You might not talk much with your fitfam, especially if it is early in the morning. But day after day, at the same class time, you get used to seeing the same handful of faces joining you in sweat and effort on the WOD. We say hi, smile, and fist bump or high five. Sometimes we talk about the workout, our lives, or personal things. Sometimes we just smile and acknowledge them.
Our fitfam is part of the motivation to go workout as often as we do. We know that those faces (including our coach) will be there, expecting to see us. We expect them to be there, and they expect us to be there. We anticipate seeing all of our names written on the board with a score next to them at the end of the WOD.
Whether or not we give them credit, our fitfam makes our life a little better. For me, I work from home, so it is not uncommon for the only people that I see and interact with regularly in real life to be my 6 am fitfam. The structure in my routine comes from doing my workouts on a regular schedule.
We might not see our fitfam every day, but there is something to be said for seeing your fellow athletes push themselves and succeed. Maybe your encouragement and cheers are the only thing getting them through the workout. You may never know what is going on inside of another athlete’s head, so be kind and cheer for them. Sometimes just showing up for class is a huge effort, and you never know what may be going on outside of the gym. Be good to your fitfam, and enjoy your time together, even if it is nothing more than that hour sweating side by side a couple times a week.
